If your pet is in need of a routine surgery, or emergency medical intervention, we have state of the art equipment and professional trained staff to help see you through your time of need. We can perform orthopedic or bone surgery, such as bone pinning of fractures, ACL/ruptured cruciate and patellar surgeries, as well as soft tissue surgeries.
As a member of AAHA (American Animal Hospital Association), we have to meet high standards for the safety of your pet. Not only do we do this as part of being a member, but it is peace of mind for not only the surgeon and staff, but you as an owner.
ANESTHESIA
Isoflurane and Sevoflurane gas anesthesia, the newest and safest veterinary anesthetic, are administered to the surgical patients in our hospital. Sevoflurane is an espicially safer gas anesthesia for the very old and high risk patients, as well as our very small exotic patients who are especially anesthetic sensitive.
What do we have that other practices may not?h
ACL/Ruptured Cruciate Knee Surgery
We use the Securos Crimping System with the following advantages:
1. No bulky knot. The traditional "suture technique" for repairing the ruptured cruciate ligament is the method employed by most other clinics. This technique can result in a bulky suture knot under the skin which can sometimes be seen, felt by hand when petting the dog, even worse can stimulate enough post-op inflammation to result in a seroma, or fluid filled sack.
The Securos Crimping System, however, is a very small, compressed tube, which is crimped by a special instrument to tighten the "ruptured ligament replacement suture" rather than the bulky knot, therefore eliminating the post-operative complications discussed previously.
2. Permanently Stable Knee Joint
This "bulky knot" may slip with time, resulting in the suture loosening and the knee joint becoming unstable and painful. The Securos is a suture designed to m echanically replace the ruptured ligament eliminating the knee joint laxity and pain, resulting in a stable and pain-free joint.
The Securos System, we use, utilizes the "crimped " tube instead of the knot. It is impossible to slip and will permanently remain tight for a stable and pain-free joint. This tube is placed over the two ends of the suture, and crimped down with a verhy precise "crimping instrument" which has been calibrated to exert just the right amont of pressure down on the tube over the suture so the suture is secure and cannot loosen.
3. Better Tension/More Stable Pain-free Joint
The traditional technique requires the surgeon to use manual tension on the suture as an assistant places a clamp over the knot. Meanwhile, the surgeon tests the knee joint stability and finishes tying the knot, hoping the suture doesn't slip creating an unstable joint, or to have to repeat because the knot isn't tight enough.
The Securos System utilizes a total of three crimp tubes and a tensioning device instrument. This instrument has a retcheting design, so it can be used to gently increase the tension on the suture one ratchet at a time. This helps get just the precise amount of stability and tension on the suture prior to crimping the final permanent tube. This results in an excellent, stable joint.
We would be happy to show you a short video, demonstrating these principles. If you are interested, we also have available a video you may borrow that illustrates the entire cruciate surgery including th crimping system which illustrates the complexity of this surgical procedure and why it is an investment in your pet's quality of life.
CRYOSURGERY/THERAPY
Since its introduction to veterinary medicine as a useful adjunct in the removal of diseased tissue, cryosurgery has in many ways surpassed the efficacy of alternative treatments. Controlled cryosurgery is particularly suitable since post-operative problems such as bleeding, infection and suture removal are minimal to nonexistent.
This unique medical device brings innovative cryosurgical technology based upon the direct application of nitrous oxide on the lesion. The combination of a high-pressure jet with a constant low temperature of minus(-) 127*F offers unparalleled freezing power. Treatment time is reduced to only a few seconds and little discomfort is experienced by the patient.
The Cyoprobe cryosurgical instrument was designed utilizing the latest microtechnology and offers the most advanced hand held cryosurgical instrumentation available today. Because of its ability to destroy tissues with pinpoint precision, accurate to the millimeter, the possibility of destroying normal healthy tissue adjacent to the deseased tissue is minimized.
WHAT IS CRYOSURGERY?
Cryosurgery is broadly defined as the controlled destruction of unwanted tissue by the precise application of extreme cold during clinical procedures.
BENEFICIAL EFFECTS OF CRYOSURGERY
Cryosurgical treatment is very well tolerated by the patient. Because there is little to no discomfort in most cases, anesthesia is unnecessary.
Relative analgesia ( lack of pain ) both during and after treatment results from the destruction of sensory nerve endings. Minimal or no bleeding occurs at the surgical site.
Following cryosurgery, the frozen tissue will shed within 7-10 postoperative days. Complete healing will occur in from three to six weeks.
Tissues are frozen and thus no migration of cells occur. A serious disavantage of conventional tumor removal with a surgical blade is that handling frequently leads to the spread of cancer cells through the circulatory system. A biopsy may be taken from the frozen block of tissue for histopath without fear of spreading cancer cells.
There is some evidence ( Shulman, Yantorno and Bronson ) that the products of the cryodestruction of tumor cells my enhance the ability of the patient to produce antibody against a tumor, such that the extent of destruction reaches beyond the areas initially frozen.
